Briquetted silicon carbide slabs are commonly charged into Basic Oxygen Furnaces as a hot metal extender and fuel source. The heat generated by the burning of SIC allows a greater percentage of steel scrap to be used in the BOF charge. The silicon carbide can also be used to bring a heat back to temperature if cooling has occurred during a delay.

In carbon steel Electric Arc Furnace shops, granular silicon carbide can be used as a slag de-oxidant.

Briquetted products are used extensively in iron foundries.
In cupola melting, the briquettes serve primarily as an alloying source, providing silicon.
SIC additions act as supplementary fuel sources to the coke charge and can increase melt rates.
